Lesson Title: Reading Topographic Maps

Lesson Title: Reading Topographic Maps

Grade Level: 5th Grade

Subject: Science

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will be able to identify the key features of a topographic map.
  • Students will be able to interpret contour lines to determine elevation and slope.
  • Students will be able to use a topographic map to identify landforms and features.

Materials:

  • Topographic maps (local or regional)
  • Colored pencils or markers
  • Rulers

Procedure:

  1. Begin by introducing students to topographic maps. Explain that topographic maps are used to show the shape and elevation of the land.
  2. Show students the key features of a topographic map, such as the map title, scale, legend, and contour lines.
  3. Explain how contour lines are used to represent elevation. Have students practice drawing contour lines on a piece of paper.
  4. Show students how to use the map scale to determine the distance between two points on the map.
  5. Have students use colored pencils or markers to identify different landforms on the map, such as mountains, valleys, rivers, and lakes.
  6. Have students work in pairs or small groups to answer questions about the topographic map.

Assessment:

  • Collect students' work to assess their understanding of topographic maps.
  • Observe students as they work on the map activities.
  • Ask students questions about the topographic map.

Extension Activities:

  • Have students create their own topographic maps of a familiar area.
  • Have students research different types of landforms and how they are formed.
  • Have students use a topographic map to plan a hike or other outdoor activity.

Differentiation:

  • For students who are struggling, provide them with additional support as they learn to interpret contour lines.
  • For students who are ahead, challenge them to create more complex topographic maps.

Interdisciplinary Connections:

  • Math: Students can use their knowledge of scale to solve problems involving distance and area.
  • Language Arts: Students can write descriptions of landforms based on their interpretation of a topographic map.
  • Social Studies: Students can research how topographic maps have been used to plan settlements and transportation routes.

Online Games

National Geographic MapMaker Interactive is an online game that allows users to create their own topographic maps. Users can add and remove landforms, such as mountains, valleys, and rivers. They can also change the elevation of the land. The game includes a number of challenges that help users learn about topographic maps.
