Lesson: Multiplication

Multiplication is a mathematical operation that involves combining equal groups. It can be thought of as repeated addition. For example, 3 multiplied by 4 (written as 3 × 4 or 3 * 4) is the same as adding 3 groups of 4 together.

In the picture above, we have 3 rows of 4 circles. The total number of circles is 12. Therefore, 3 × 4 = 12.

Multiplication can also be represented using an array. An array is a grid of numbers arranged in rows and columns. The number of rows in an array is equal to the first number being multiplied. The number of columns in an array is equal to the second number being multiplied.

In the array above, we have 3 rows and 4 columns. The total number of circles is 12. Therefore, 3 × 4 = 12.

Here are some other ways to think about multiplication:

  • Multiplication is like scaling. If you scale something by a factor of 3, you make it 3 times bigger.
  • Multiplication is like finding the area of a rectangle. The area of a rectangle is the length times the width.
  • Multiplication is like finding the volume of a box. The volume of a box is the length times the width times the height.

Multiplication is a fundamental mathematical operation that is used in many different areas of math and science.
