How can you keep from being eaten by a bear

There are a few things you can do to keep from being eaten by a bear:

  • Make noise. Bears are more likely to avoid people who are making noise, so talk or sing to yourself when you're hiking in bear country.
  • Carry bear spray. Bear spray is a pepper spray that can deter bears. If you see a bear, spray it with the bear spray and back away slowly.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. Bears are good at hiding, so be on the lookout for them when you're hiking.
  • Don't leave food out. Bears are attracted to food, so don't leave food out at your campsite or in your car.
  • If you see a bear, don't run. Bears can run faster than humans, so running will only make you a target. Instead, back away slowly and make noise.
  • If a bear attacks you, fight back. Bears don't expect their prey to fight back, so fighting back may deter the bear. Aim for the bear's eyes and nose.

Here are some additional tips:

  • Travel with a partner or group. Bears are less likely to attack a group of people than an individual.
  • Hike during the day. Bears are most active at dawn and dusk, so it's best to hike during the day.
  • Avoid hiking in areas with thick brush or tall grass. Bears can hide in these areas, so it's best to avoid them.
  • If you see a bear cub, don't approach it. The mother bear is likely nearby and will protect her cub.
