A Lesson for the Golden Horseshoe

  The Battle of Point Pleasant

The Battle of Point Pleasant, also known as the Battle of Kanawha and the Battle of Great Kanawha, was the only major action of Dunmore's War. It was fought on October 10, 1774, between the Virginia militia and Shawnee and Mingo warriors.

The battle took place at the confluence of the Kanawha and Ohio rivers, near present-day Point Pleasant, West Virginia. The Virginia militia, led by Colonel Andrew Lewis, was encamped on the north bank of the Ohio River. The Shawnee and Mingo warriors, led by Chief Cornstalk, were encamped on the south bank of the Kanawha River.

On the morning of October 10, 1774, the Shawnee and Mingo warriors launched a surprise attack on the Virginia militia. The attack began with a volley of gunfire, followed by a charge by the warriors. The Virginia militia returned fire, and the battle quickly became a close-quarters fight.

The battle raged for several hours. The Virginia militia was eventually able to drive the Shawnee and Mingo warriors back across the Kanawha River. The Shawnee and Mingo warriors suffered heavy casualties, and Chief Cornstalk was wounded.

The Battle of Point Pleasant was a victory for the Virginia militia. The victory helped to secure the Ohio Valley for the Americans and paved the way for further settlement of the region.

The Battle of Point Pleasant is considered to be one of the first battles of the American Revolutionary War. The battle was fought just a few years before the outbreak of the war, and it helped to build resentment among the colonists towards the British government.

The Battle of Point Pleasant is commemorated today by the Tu-Endie-Wei State Park, which is located on the site of the battle. The park features a museum, a reconstructed fort, and a hiking trail that leads to the battleground.
