Harter WV, a lumber town

 

Harter was a lumber town in Pocahontas County, West Virginia, United States. It was located on the Greenbrier River, about 5 miles northeast of Marlinton. The town was founded in 1890 by the Harter Brothers Lumber Company. The company built a sawmill and a company town, which included houses, a school, a church, and a store.

Harter was a thriving lumber town in the early 1900s. The Harter Brothers Lumber Company was one of the largest lumber companies in West Virginia. The company employed over 200 people and produced millions of board feet of lumber each year.

However, the lumber industry in West Virginia began to decline in the early 1920s. The Harter Brothers Lumber Company closed its sawmill in 1923. The town of Harter declined rapidly after the sawmill closed. Most of the residents left the town, and the buildings were abandoned.

Today, Harter is a ghost town. The only remaining structures are the foundations of the sawmill and a few of the company houses. The town is now part of the Monongahela National Forest.

Harter is a reminder of the lumber industry's impact on West Virginia. The lumber industry was a major economic driver in the state for many years. However, the industry's decline had a devastating impact on many lumber towns, like Harter.
