Burner Dam Lake, Pocahontas County's newest fishing, boating and swimming spot, was completed today by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The lake, which is located on the Greenbrier River near Marlinton, will be open for fishing in the spring of 1964, and boating and swimming will be available as soon as the water fills the dam.
Congressman Harley O. Staggers, who was present for the completion ceremony, said that every effort should be made to utilize the wealth of natural resources in West Virginia.
"Burner Dam Lake is a prime example of what can be done to develop our state's natural resources," Staggers said. "This lake will provide recreation for thousands of people each year, and it will also help to boost the economy of Pocahontas County."
The lake is named after the late Colonel William B. Burner, who was a native of Pocahontas County and a distinguished soldier in World War I and World War II.
The lake covers an area of 2,600 acres and has a shoreline of 20 miles. It is expected to attract fishermen from all over the country, as it is stocked with trout, bass, and other game fish.
In addition to fishing, boating, and swimming, the lake will also offer facilities for camping, picnicking, and hiking.
The completion of Burner Dam Lake is a major accomplishment for Pocahontas County and for the State of West Virginia. It is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the many people who were involved in its construction.
